The processing problems associated with boron carbide and the limitations of its mechanical properties can be significantly reduced when a metal phase (e.g., aluminum) is added. Lower densification temperatures and higher fracture toughness will result. Based on fundamental capillarity ther modynamics, reaction thermodynamics, and densification kinetics, we have established reliable criteria for fabricating B4 C–Al particulate composites. Because chemical reactions cannot be eliminated, it is necessary to process B4 C–AI by rapidly heating to near 1200°C (to ensure wetting) and subsequently heat-treating below 1200°C (for microstructural development). 相似文献

Atomic stick–slip friction has been predicted by molecular dynamics simulation and observed in experiments. However, direct
quantitative comparison of the two has thus far not been possible because of the large difference between scanning velocities
accessible to simulations and experiments. In general, the slowest sliding speeds in MD simulations are at least five orders
of magnitude larger than the upper limit available to experimentalists. To take a step toward bridging this gap, we have applied
parallel replica dynamics, an accelerated molecular dynamics method, to the simulation of atomic stick–slip. The method allows
molecular simulations to run parallel in time in order to extend their duration, thereby enabling lower scanning velocities.
We show here that this method is able to predict atomic stick–slip friction accurately and efficiently at scanning speeds
several orders of magnitude slower than standard molecular dynamics simulations. The accuracy and usefulness of this method
is illustrated by correct prediction of the logarithmic dependence of friction on velocity. 相似文献

This paper presents an overview of a demonstration project in which corroding prestressed piles located in tidal waters were wrapped underwater using carbon and glass fiber-reinforced polymer material. An innovative instrumentation scheme was developed to allow assessment of the prewrap and postwrap corrosion state using linear polarization. This system is simple to install and eliminates the need for wiring or junction boxes. The underwater wrap used a unique water-activated urethane resin system that eliminated the need for cofferdam construction. Linear polarization measurements taken before and after wrapping indicate that the corrosion rate in the wrapped specimens is consistently lower than those in its unwrapped counterpart. These preliminary findings are encouraging and suggest that underwater wrapping without cofferdam construction may provide a cost-effective solution for pile repair. 相似文献

The walls of sclerenchyma, vascular bundle sheaths, and parenchyma at different maturities (internodes 2, 5, and 7 from the apex) of bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L) Pers] were analyzed by UV absorption microspectrophotometry, and the results were related to wall digestibility. Sclerenchyma walls from internode 2 were degraded by rumen microorganisms, with only the middle lamella remaining. Undegraded sclerenchyma walls gave a UV absorption spectrum similar to that of p-coumaroyl and feruloyl arabinoxylo-trisaccharides isolated from bermudagrass cell walls. Absorption maxima occurred at ? 245 and 320 nm, together with a shoulder at ? 280 nm. Sclerenchyma from the older internodes 5 and 7 showed only partial degradation of the secondary wall adjacent to the lumen. Spectra of undegraded walls from these internodes showed absorption maxima at ? 245 and 285 nm with a shoulder at ? 320 nm. Spectra of sclerenchyma walls that included the middle lamellae gave a higher absorption at ? 320 nm than did wall layers excluding the middle lamellae. Vascular bundle sheaths generally were similar in digestion patterns and spectra to those of sclerenchyma. Parenchyma cells in internode 2, which were totally degradable, gave low absorbance. Parenchyma cell walls from internodes 5 and 7 were degraded except for the middle lamellae in cells nearest to the sclerenchyma; parenchyma cells nearest to the stem centre were totally degraded. Spectra of parenchyma wall regions that included middle lamellae were similar to the p-coumaroyl and feruloyl arabinoxylo-trisaccharides, and absorbance values were low compared with sclerenchyma and vascular walls. Results suggested that esteror ether-linked phenolic acids accounted for most of the UV absorption in young sclerenchyma and young and old parenchyma; lignin-like aromatics increased in older, poorly digested sclerenchyma as ester/ether-type compounds decreased. An estimation of the amount of ‘ferulic acid equivalents’ of the walls was made assuming all the absorbance at ? λmax 320 nm was due to ferulic acid; older sclerenchyma walls had the highest values (160 mg g?1 walls) and parenchyma walls the lowest (11 mg g?1 walls). 相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) microspectroscopic mapping was investigated as a tool to study the effects of enzymatic retting of flax stems. The FT‐IR technique permitted the elucidation of the relative loss or changes in the distribution of key chemical components after treatment with enzymes or enzyme/chelator mixtures in association with visible changes in structure. Cross‐sections of Ariane flax stems were treated with SP 249 (a pectinase‐rich enzyme mixture from Novo Nordisk) at 0.5, 0.7 or 1.0 ml l?1 concentration in pH 5 acetate buffer for 6 h at 40 °C. Flax stems treated with 0.5 or 0.7 ml l?1 SP 249 and 50 mM oxalic acid as a chelator were also investigated by the technique. The results indicated that treatment with 0.5 ml l?1 SP 249 alone was ineffective in releasing the fibre bundles from the surrounding tissue, but the release was increased by the addition of 50 mM oxalic acid as a likely chelator for the cations of pectate salts. However, the IR spectra of the bundles indicated that an insoluble oxalate salt remained on the tissue after this treatment. Increasing the concentration of SP 249 to 0.7 ml l?1 plus 50 mM oxalic acid was effective in releasing the fibre bundles and generating some ultimate fibres with no detectable oxalate expectate salt residues. Increasing the SP 249 concentration to 1.0 ml l?1 without using oxalic acid was effective in separating the fibre bundles into ultimate (individual) fibres, leaving no pectate salt residue and only a trace of pectic esters and/or acids. The use of infrared mapping, or so‐called chemical imaging, is shown to have advantages over visible imaging alone in that it can detect and locate the chemical species present after each treatment in relation to the anatomical features of the flax stem. Based on the major Department of Energy Solar Industrial Process Heat Program, it has been determined that the existing techniques for predicting the performance of parabolic trough solar collectors greatly overpredict the thermal output of these systems. The objective of the research reported herein is to improve the predictive capability of existing models by incorporating a factor that accounts for dust and dirt accumulation on the optical surfaces. This has been accomplished by modifying the optical efficiency with a dust factor to account for the reduced reflectivity of the mirror and reduced transmissivity of the cover glass. This technique has been developed independent of the test data used for verification. The dust factors have been developed from exposure tests conducted at six different sites, so that it is also independent of location and collector type. Wash frequency and optical degradation rate are input to the model to compute the time varying dust factors. Recommendations for these parameters are provided based on long-term observations. The complete model is then used to provide realistic predictions of real-world performance of solar IPH systems. 相似文献

There is much interest from the fisheries industry in developing rapid methods to evaluate real-time freshness of fish and seafood products. Emphasis is on the ones that would reflect and account for the products history and their storage conditions from “harvest-to-home”. The development of a “smart packaging” that monitors the microbial breakdown products in the headspace of packaged fish is described. When fish spoils it releases a variety of basic volatile amines which are detectable with appropriate pH indicating sensors. These are prepared by entrapping within a polymer matrix a pH sensitive dye that responds, through visible color changes to the spoilage volatile compounds that contribute to a quantity known as total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N). Laboratory trials on fresh fish filets showed that the sensor accurately tracks the increase in amines concentration in the package headspace. The response was also found to correlate to changing microbial populations (total viable count or TVC and Pseudomonas spp.). In addition, leaching of the dye was assessed over time to assess the suitability of the sensor formulation for food packaging application. 相似文献

The ability of bone char to adsorb three metal ions, namely, cadmium, copper and zinc, from effluents in fixed beds has been studied. Two binary metal ion sorption systems, Cd+Cu and Cu+Zn, have been investigated. The variables studied include metal ion solution flowrate, initial metal ion concentration, and bone char particle size bed height. The experimental breakthrough curves for each binary system were measured at five bed heights.A multicomponent film-surface diffusion model has been developed to predict the breakthrough curves by incorporating the IAS for both the Langmuir and the Sips equations, since they both correlate the single component equilibrium isotherm data well. A novel development is the modification of the solution methodology, previously restricted to a constant diffusivity, to incorporate a variable diffusivity correlated with adsorbent coverage by the constant self-diffusivity.
